Julie's provided over 20 different Adult and Children’s Services, in keeping with its comprehensive and holistic approach, to well over 200 disadvantaged, low-income, young mothers and their children (current participants and alums). The services included: licensed Infant and Toddler Child Development Centers, our Montessori Pre-School, adult basic education (ABE), emergency food and assistance (rent, utilities, etc.), career counseling, college preparation, tutoring, family literacy, job training, post-employment support, alumni services, technology literacy, parenting skills, health and wellness, nutrition, money management classes, individual and group counseling, housing and legal advocacy, and transportation.
The following successes were a result of the diligent work of Julie’s mothers and their children, and the dedication of our staff in helping each family member reach their goals despite the adversity they face on a daily basis.
- 100% of mothers present in our daily services achieved the following:
- Improved their adult basic education (literacy, math skills, etc), and their parenting skills (i.e. increased involvement with their children’s school and teachers, more patience, more time spent reading with their children, better anger control and discipline management, etc.).
- Improved their financial management, family budget, and computer skills.
- Expanded their knowledge of health and nutrition issues.
- Over 100 families received food cards, emergency food, Holiday meals, and/or back-to-school assistance. Families also received rent and utilities assistance.
- Four women received scholarships to attend college. Three mothers made it onto the Dean’s List.
- Six women enrolled in college courses and we assisted fifteen women in filling out their financial aid forms.
- Twelve women received ongoing tutoring assistance
- Five women received their GEDs and graduated this year, and are planning to attend college this fall.
- Four adult learners who were in college this year will return in the fall.
- Fifteen women are at a pre-GED level or close to completing their GED.
- Ten mothers participated in a smoking cessation program.
- Forty children received individual assessments and learning plans. Three were diagnosed as needing special intervention and began receiving these services.
- 100% of the children demonstrated age-appropriate growth in language and motor skills as tested in evaluations.
- Volunteers contributed over 5000 hours in the last year.
- We project that 75% of eligible Montessori students entering the first grade will test at or above grade level.
- The mothers participated in a Women Expanding Literacy Education Action Resource Network (WE LEARN) writing contest. Fourteen were published in WE LEARN’s journal, three received honorable mentions, and two won cash prizes and scholarships to attend the organization’s major conference at Fordham University in New York.
- Many of the mothers participated in the MA Coalition for the Homeless Legislative Action Day at the State House and spoke directly with their respective Senators and Representatives about affordable housing.
